Playing Dirty in the mountains around Canon City, CO

FUN, FRIENDS, VIEWS

Canon City, Colorado is a great place to live with family activities going on every weekend. What do the following have in common: Big Horn Sheep, Bat Cave, Devil’s Horns, Arkansas River, Royal Gorge Visitors Center, Devils Pitchfork, Bull Gulch, Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range, Rocky Road and Devils Hole? These are some of the things I saw Sunday. I had the opportunity this weekend to go on a tour with Play Dirty ATV’s. The day started out cloudy and cold with misty rain and I was sure we would freeze, they assured us that they had all the gear needed to keep us comfortable, they were true to their word. They had rain gear and gloves, but it turned out that we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Our group had people with various skill levels but they made sure we all had fun. We started out at 6200 feet in elevation but quickly made it to about 8500 feet and back down again. The views were beyond incredible. The guides are knowledgable about the history and geology of the area and stop to show off points of interest, giving us a chance to take a quick break and lots of photos. If you are looking for something to do when in Colorado, give this a try they are open year round and offer a unique family outing or corporate retreat option. We had so much fun, I will be back to do it again. For the record Devils Horns and Pitchfork are a series of rock formations along the rim of an extinct volcano over looking Devils Hole which is the valley created by the formations. The bat cave is an old mine shaft in a wall of granite which has been sealed off with a metal grate with an opening to let the bats who summer there come and go freely.

While you are in the area also check out The Abbey, The Abbey Winery, The Royal Gorge, The Train, Garden Park, Dinosaur Depot, Prison Museum and so much more.

The history of the Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado

The Abbey in Canon City, CO was actually built as a Monastery. Most visitors are surprised that this Tudor Gothic styled building is not a huge Cathedral, but was built as a Catholic Monastery and was used as such from 1924-2005; originally named The Holy Cross Abbey. The monks opened the Chapel to the public to join them in prayers and mass. Abandon the frantic pace and come to a place of beauty and serenity, take a step back in time and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. We welcome visitors to the campus from 8:30AM – 4:30PM 7 days a week, however the Monastery and business offices are not open on Saturday or Sunday and most Holidays, we do ask that you respect the “Private” and “Not Open to the Public” postings. There are historic photos on display and the Victorian furniture from the Stratmore Hotel in Canon City is still on display in the South Parlor and the historic cemetary for the monks is located just a short walk north of the events center. The Abbey is now privately owned and is offering many event services including a wedding coordinator and its own catering service

The Hedley Dormitory is a 56 room lodging building for retreats or reunions. The Sisters Convent House is a beautiful 2-story Tudor Style Lodge for use to groups of up to 22 guests. It has a conference room, a kitchenette and an outdoor BBQ patio. There are even camping facilities available. The Abbey has Canon City’s largest and most utilized Event Center housed in a modern glassed building behind the Monastery. It is available for all types of parties, receptions, meetings and more. The Abbey catering staff offers menu options that are second to none.

There are a wide variety of events held at the abbey, including BBQ Cook Offs, Home and Garden shows, Weddings and Corporate Retreats, Reunions, Community Events, Ghost Hunting Tours and so much more. Plan a family reunion and stay at The Abbey or just stop in for a self guided tour.

The Abbey is located on 200 acres of property in Canon City, Colorado. The beauty and history of the building make it a must see when in the area visiting the Royal Gorge, White Water Rafting, Shopping for Antiques or Searching for Fossils in Garden Park.
